Artificially intelligence, also know as AI, is a machine that performs cognitive functions like perceiving, reasoning, learning and interacting (Ergen, 2019). Did you know AI is evident in our day-to-day lives? Alexa or Grammarly are all evidence of artificial intelligence. But what about AI in education?
AI has been rapidly included in education, a few examples include automatic grading systems, virtual reality in learning, or accurate reading (Marrone et al., 2022). A recent AI invention, ChatGPT, have been the talk of town these days and is actually banned from education. But could ChatGPT enhance creativity in students?

How does ChatGPT enhance creativity?
Creativity can be enhanced through online social interactions according to Wheeler et al. (2002), and this is certainly evident in ChatGPT with its dialogue format. According to Open AI (2022), ChatGPT uses a dialogue format website that allow users to receive detailed responses of their question in a human-like conversation. Therefore if students use ChatGPT, they are socially interacting with the AI and this interaction could enhance creativity.
ChatGPT can also enhance creativity as it can add new and unfamiliar ideas to students. For example, a teacher asks her class to describe their pets in preparation for them to write a poem. Students are using their creativity to produce words of description, which is part of creativity (Henriksen et al., 2021). The teacher then tells students to use ChatGPT and find new words to describe their pet, and ChatGPT would generate a list of description, some which are new and unfamiliar to the student. In this instance, ChatGPT was used to enhance student’s creativity; students themselves generate ideas, and ChatGPT enhanced their creativity by adding unfamiliar new ideas.
Limitations

Using ChatGPT to add ideas has a significant limitation. First, it relies on teachers to make sure students don’t search for the answers right away. Creativity could be hindered if students ask ChatGPT “I need to write a poem about my pet for my homework”, and as screenshot 2 shows, a full poem was written out within seconds. Second, if ChatGPT did not come up with new ideas, it would fail to enhance student’s creativity.
Another limitation of ChatGPT is that it carries inaccurate factual information, plagiarism, fraud, and even copyright infringements (Gordijin & Have, 2023). This suggests that over-reliance on it, especially for young learners, can cause them to learn false information.

Hi Alicia. Thanks for your blog.
I found very interesting the idea of using Chat GPT for nurturing creativity. I liked reading your post because it helped me think about using AI in the classroom.
I think it is a great tool, but to take advantage of it, it is necessary to use it well. As you point out, maybe what teachers should do is not avoiding it or prohibited but teach student how to use it with responsability and in a way that can help their development. It is an excellent opportunity to help students reflect on their education's purpose and not the contrary. I think that a possible way of doing this is by putting complicated problems with…
Hi Alicia,
I really love your blog post! The blog is clearly to discuss what is ChatGPT and ChatGPT is a controversial software, it can bring us a lot of ideas, I especially like the example you gave using chatgpt to describe some vocabulary unfamiliar to the students and ginaing their knowledge and new ideas to improve their creativity.

Hi Alicia,
Great topic on choosing ChatGPT! It is one of the technologies that everyone is talking about nowadays and through your blog I got to know more about it again. I love the screenshots you put in your blog, they allow us to see more visually the capabilities of ChatGPT, and I think it's brilliant that you gave the question of 'what is chatGPT' to itself. I would suggest adding a video on the process of it generating answers, this will provide more information for people that never used it before.
Excellent thoughts on how it can foster creativity, the example you described is very interesting. Something to add could be the link between ChatGPT and the current curriculum,…
